A downloadable plugin for Windows, macOS, and Linux

PS1 samples alone don't sound like a PS1. The console's reverb and crunch do the rest.

simpleSPU FX puts the PlayStation sound chip's reverb and grit on any sound: music stems, SFX, voice lines, footsteps or a whole mix. simpleSPU is the matching instrument, with 109 PS1-style presets. One installer and one licence give you both.

simpleSPU FX: the effect

  • Nine reverb types built from the chip's own published settings: room, three studios, hall, space, echo, delay and half echo
  • One Crush knob, or dig in: bits, sample rate, 4-bit ADPCM, CD-ROM XA disc stream, tone and drive
  • 18 presets, from Gentle Bitcrush and Lo-Fi Hall Reverb to Extreme 2-Bit Crush and Muffled Underwater
  • Dry/wet crush mix and a choice of crush-first or reverb-first
  • Sounds the same at 44.1, 48 and 96 kHz, and every control can be automated

simpleSPU: the instrument

  • 109 presets: pads, strings, choirs, bells, keys, leads, basses, drum kits and atmospheres
  • Samples stored as 4-bit ADPCM and pitched with the chip's Gaussian interpolation
  • 24 voices by default, up to 64

For game audio

simpleSPU FX is a DAW plugin, not a Unity or Godot plugin. Put it on a track in REAPER, Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic Pro, Bitwig or any VST3/AU host, render your sounds, then drop the WAV or OGG files into Godot, Unity, Unreal or GameMaker. REAPER's free trial works fine if you don't have a DAW yet.
